WHALE WATCHERS VALLARTA

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your whale watching adventure.

1. When is the best time for whale watching in Puerto Vallarta? The best time for whale watching in Puerto Vallarta is from December through March, when humpback whales gather in the warm waters of Banderas Bay to breed, give birth, and care for their calves. This peak season offers excellent opportunities to witness spectacular natural behaviors, including breaching, head slapping, tail slapping, and fluking.

2. When do humpback whales arrive in Banderas Bay, and when do they leave? Humpback whales begin arriving in Banderas Bay as early as late October, with increasing numbers throughout November and December. Most whales begin their northward migration in late March, although some may remain until middle April. The official whale-watching season runs from December through March, offering the best opportunities to encounter these magnificent marine mammals.

3. What are the chances of seeing whales in Puerto Vallarta? The chances of spotting humpback whales in Banderas Bay are excellent during peak season, particularly from December through March. Our experienced captains and marine biologists are familiar with whale activity and movement patterns, helping us find the best opportunities for sightings. While encounters are highly likely during the season, whales are wild animals, and sightings or specific behaviors can never be guaranteed.

4. Is whale watching better in Puerto Vallarta or Punta Mita? Both destinations offer exceptional whale-watching experiences, each with unique advantages. Punta Mita is one of the prime whale-watching locations in Banderas Bay, known for its high concentration of humpback whales, natural migration routes, and important breeding and nursery areas. Puerto Vallarta also offers fantastic encounters, with whales gathering throughout the bay to breed, nurse their calves, sing, and socialize. It’s also an ideal departure point for guests staying in the city or arriving by cruise ship. Whichever you choose, both locations offer unforgettable opportunities to experience humpback whales in their natural habitat.

5. What is the difference between private and shared whale watching tours? Private whale-watching tours offer a more exclusive and personalized experience, with the entire boat reserved for your family or group. Shared tours allow you to enjoy the same incredible marine environment alongside other guests, making them an excellent option for couples, solo travelers, and smaller groups. Both options are led by our experienced crew and focus on responsible whale watching.

6. How long are your whale watching tours? Our private whale-watching tours from Puerto Vallarta are available in 3-hour and 4-hour options. The 3-hour tour is dedicated to whale watching, while the 4-hour experience includes whale watching and approximately one hour of snorkeling at Los Arcos Marine Park. From Punta Mita, our private whale-watching tours last approximately 3 hours.

7. Is morning or afternoon better for whale watching? Humpback whales are active throughout the day, so both morning and afternoon tours offer excellent opportunities for sightings. Morning departures typically feature calmer ocean conditions, making them especially comfortable for families and guests prone to seasickness. Afternoon tours can be just as rewarding, although winds and waves tend to increase later in the day.

8. Are your whale watching tours suitable for children? Absolutely! Whale watching is a wonderful experience for families and children of all ages. Our private tours have no minimum age requirement, offering families with young children a more comfortable and personalized experience. Children must be at least 4 years old to join our shared whale-watching tours.

9. Are your whale watching tours suitable for cruise ship passengers? Yes! Our Puerto Vallarta whale-watching tours are a great option for cruise ship passengers. Tours depart from Los Peines Pier, just a short drive from the cruise terminal. Our morning departures are particularly convenient for many cruise itineraries, allowing guests to enjoy whale watching while planning sufficient time to return to their ship.

10. Where do your whale watching tours depart from? We offer whale-watching departures from two convenient locations in Banderas Bay. Our Puerto Vallarta tours depart from Los Peines Pier, near the cruise ship terminal, while our Punta Mita tours depart from Punta Mita, an ideal location for guests staying in the northern part of the bay. Detailed meeting instructions are provided with every booking confirmation.

11. What should I bring on a whale watching tour? We recommend bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a light jacket, and a camera to capture your experience. Comfortable clothing and shoes are ideal for Puerto Vallarta departures, while sandals are recommended for Punta Mita tours. If you are prone to motion sickness, consider taking appropriate precautions before your tour.

12. Can we hear humpback whales singing during the tour? Yes! Our boats are equipped with an underwater hydrophone that allows us to listen to the fascinating songs of male humpback whales when conditions permit. These complex underwater vocalizations can travel great distances and are among the most extraordinary sounds in the ocean. Listening to whale songs is a truly special part of the experience.

13. Can we combine whale watching with snorkeling at Los Arcos or the Marietas Islands? Yes! Our 4-hour private tour from Puerto Vallarta combines whale watching with approximately one hour of snorkeling at Los Arcos Marine Park, known for its beautiful rock formations and abundant marine life. From Punta Mita, we also offer tours that combine whale watching with snorkeling around the Marietas Islands, offering two incredible marine experiences in one adventure. Activities are subject to ocean conditions.

15. What happens if the weather is bad or we don’t see whales? Your safety and comfort are always our priority. If weather or ocean conditions make a tour unsafe, we may need to reschedule or cancel the departure in accordance with our booking policies. Although whale sightings are very common during peak season, humpback whales are wild animals, and encounters cannot be guaranteed. Our experienced crew always strives to make every tour a memorable experience.

16. How much does whale watching cost in Puerto Vallarta? Whale-watching prices in Puerto Vallarta vary depending on the type of tour, duration, and group size. At Whale Watchers Vallarta, our shared morning whale-watching tour costs MXN $2,000 per person, while private tours offer a more personalized experience with your own boat, captain, and expert marine guide. We offer 3-hour private whale-watching tours and 4-hour experiences that also include snorkeling at Los Arcos Marine Park. Explore our tours to find the perfect whale-watching experience for your group.

17. Is whale watching regulated in Puerto Vallarta? Yes! Whale watching in Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay is regulated by the Mexican government to protect humpback whales and ensure responsible wildlife encounters. Authorized tour operators must follow strict guidelines, including maintaining safe distances, limiting the number of boats around whales, and avoiding activities that could disturb their natural behavior. These regulations help protect the whales and their calves while allowing visitors to enjoy respectful, unforgettable encounters with these magnificent animals.

18. How close can whale-watching boats get to humpback whales? In Mexico, whale-watching boats must maintain a minimum distance from humpback whales, generally 60 meters for authorized small vessels and 80 meters for larger vessels, depending on their size and characteristics. Captains must approach whales slowly and carefully, avoiding sudden movements, chasing, or interfering with their natural behavior. Sometimes whales voluntarily approach boats, creating extraordinary encounters. When this happens, vessels must follow the appropriate safety procedures and allow the whales to move freely.

19. Why should I choose a responsible whale-watching tour in Puerto Vallarta? Responsible whale watching allows you to experience the incredible beauty of humpback whales while helping protect them and their natural habitat. By choosing an authorized operator with knowledgeable guides and experienced captains, you support respectful wildlife encounters that minimize disturbance to whales, especially mothers and their calves. At Whale Watchers Vallarta, we believe the most memorable encounters happen when whales are free to behave naturally. Our goal is to provide an educational, meaningful, and unforgettable experience while keeping their well-being our priority.
